Ray Mattes
PhD Student
Ray is a 3rd year Nuclear Engineering PhD student at the University of Tennessee Knoxville working under Livia Casali. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics, graduating from Purdue University in 2020. While at Purdue, he worked on Fermilab’s Mu2e experiment and completed an internship with the Fusion Engineering group at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. His current research consists of experiments and modeling focused on the isotope effect at the DIII-D tokamak.

Austin Welsh
PhD Student

Kuan-Wei Lee
PhD Student
Kuan is a second-year PhD student working with Professor Casali. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Washington Seattle. While studying at UW, he worked with Professor Thomas Jarboe on Spheromak research where he developed a reconstruction algorithm for the tomography system. Shortly after Kuan graduated from UW, he pursued a master’s degree in nuclear engineering at UC Berkeley and graduated in 2021. His current research focus is modeling diverter on DIIID and MAST-U with SOLPs code.

Jakeb Smiskey
PhD Student
Jakeb is a first year PhD student in the Nuclear Engineering Department studying core-edge integration for fusion devices. He got his undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2023. During his undergrad, he conducted research to reduce turbulence in the HSX stellarator.
